Fractions & Mixed Numbers: Concepts & Tips
A fraction represents part of a whole and is written as numerator/denominator, for example, 3/4. A mixed number has a whole part and a fraction part, like 2⅔.
Add/Subtract: Make denominators the same, then add or subtract the numerators.
Example: 1/3 + 1/6 = (2/6) + (1/6) = 3/6 = 1/2
Multiply: Multiply numerators together, multiply denominators together.
Example: 2/5 × 3/7 = 6/35
Divide: Multiply by the reciprocal of the divisor.
Example: 3/4 ÷ 2/5 = 3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8 = 1⅞
Simplifying Fractions: Divide numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD).
Example: 12/18 = (12÷6)/(18÷6) = 2/3
Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions: Multiply whole number by denominator, add the numerator, put over the denominator.
Example: 2 1/4 = (2×4)+1 = 9/4
If unsure, remember: improper fractions (numerator larger than denominator) and mixed numbers are equal representations.
Fraction to Decimal: Divide numerator by denominator (e.g., 3/8 = 0.375).
Decimal to Fraction: Write in fraction form and reduce (e.g., 0.375 = 375/1000 = 3/8).
